The Periwinkle, also called Centocchi, in Germany was considered the flower of immortality, while in France she was associated with friendship. In France, she was first considered the "Violet of Sorcerers" and then the "Violet of Wizards" as she was used in magic to cast spells and prepare love potions. She was also thought to be the food of Venus, the goddess of love. The English poet Geoffrey Chaucer called it "joy of the earth" and "Blue Button".

"Among tufts of primroses, in that fragrant pergola

The periwinkle climbed with its garlands,

And something told me that every flower

He enjoyed the air he breathed."

William Wordsworth - Lyrical Ballads (1798)
